Review: Hoya Pro1 Digital MC UV(0)

It may seem overkill to write a review on a filter, but the bottom line is, there doesn’t seem to be much valuable information out there concerning these rather expensive accessories. So, today I am reviewing the Hoya Pro1 Digital MC UV(0).

Hoya, one of the leading optical glass suppliers in Japan is a natural choice when it comes to filters. Although they offer filters at many price points, their standard line stands out against the competition as being the economical, single-coated filter of choice.

The Pro1 Digital MC UV(0) is one of the most effective UV suppressors on the market, with a level of quality to complement the optics of any lens. Hoya has considered every detail with this filter, from the precise, fully knurled matte-finished frame to the black-rimmed glass element. Superior coatings ensure the best protection against flaring and ghosting. It’s high effectiveness in suppressing UV radiation has been confirmed through lab tests and by myself personally through a black light test.

Build Quality
The best quality aluminum frame there is. Superior mounting of glass elements. Perfect, opaque white tampo printing.

Optical Quality
Virtually invisible except where UV radiation is present. Absolute minimal flaring and ghosts. You have to point the camera directly into a light source to see any evidence, and even then it’s a subdued green color.

Usability
Never has to come off your camera, except to use other filters or to transfer to another lens because you were squeamish about buying two of the same size. Fully knurled edge makes installation and removal a breeze.

Value
You’ll never regret paying the premium price for this filter as its exemplary performance will never let you down.

The Bottom Line
If you plan on keeping a filter on your camera at all times for protection, this is the one get. The only better option would be the Hoya HD Digital UV(0) which features hardened glass, and a more durable coating, at a 30% increase in price.
